Sofia Engelman + Em Papineau are Brooklyn-based choreographic collaborators and life partners. Their work, which engages queer improvisation practices, is effortful, conversational, and fleshy. Sofia + Em's first project together was presented at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts through the National College Dance Festival while they were students at Smith College. Since then, they have held choreographic residencies at spaces including Mana Contemporary, Ponderosa (Germany), The Dance Complex, MOtiVE Brooklyn, Sky Hill Farm Studio, The Croft, The Floor, The College of the Atlantic, and The School for Contemporary Dance & Thought. In addition to their work at these residency spaces, the pair have performed at venues including Judson Church, FRESH Festival, EstroGenius Festival, BAAD!, and ICA/Boston. Their individual performance credits include projects by Kathleen Hermesdorf, Tyler Rai, Michael Figueroa, David Appel, Claudia-Lynn Rightmire, Simon Thomas-Train, Angie Hauser, and Alice Gosti. From 2020-2022, they co-founded and co-directed freeskewl, a platform for dance, discussion, education, and reparations. During the day, Sofia teaches through her business Queer Body Pilates and Em runs around the city as a personal assistant.
The Floor’s Post Professional Performance (PPP) workshops acts as a platform for dancers to continue work in the studio and on stage. The goal of this workshop is to offer an opportunity to enjoy the process and performance of dance amongst fellow peers.
Each session hosts a curated choreographer. Over the course of 10 weeks a piece is created on the group. The workshop concludes with a showing of the work.
We are proud to have shared the stage with over 40 dancers, ages ranging from 27-70 years old.
Created in 2015 by Jamie Dowd, this POST-PROFESSIONAL WORKSHOP is a response to the lack of opportunity for dancers who had moved passed their professional career. The intent of this workshop is to bring dancers together in every stage of their life.
