JAMIE DOWD is the co-founder of The Floor, a teacher, dancer and mother. Jamie's teaching approach is informed by her classical ballet training, and anatomical knowledge. Her class focuses on incremental progress to build endurance and challenge oneself effectively.
VIOLAINE HUISMAN is the co-founder of The Floor, a writer, translator, arts curator and mother. Violaine programs literary and community events at The Floor, as a way to further the studio's mission to provide support through discussion, inclusion and reflection. She also runs the artist residency, a program designed to encourage creation in dance and hybrid forms.
MAT CLASS FACULTY
AMY BAUMGARTEN is a holistic movement coach, and a certified Embodied Anatomy & Yoga through SBMC, Pilates instructor. Using foundational principles of movement to help align the body with ease, Amy uses creative movement sequences that help break down embedded patterns.
JEN BLEIER is an educator, theatre practitioner and traveler. Jen finds joy and playfulness in movement and hopes you will too! Her teaching style is student-centered, intuitive and clear. She honors that coming to class is a radical act of self-care and strives to provide a space for people to re-center, explore and safely challenge what is possible.
JANESSA CLARK is a choreographer, doula and holds a MA. She has a contemporary movement approach incorporating anatomy, classical elements, and functional movement philosophies. Janessa creates a safe, fun and challenging class environment.
BRENDAN DRAKE is a Dancer, Choreographer and Teacher. Brendan’s classes are informed by his background in contemporary dance and somatic movement practices. Focusing on alignment and a healthy mind-body connection to provide a challenging and positive movement experience for all students.
BENJAMIN FREEDMAN is a dancer, adjunct professor and Pilates teacher. He holds a BFA in Dance and Psychology from NYU and his Pilates certification from the Kane School of Core Integration. Freedman has danced as a company member with the Mark Morris Dance Group, Keigwin + Company, Sean Curran Company, and The Metropolitan Opera Ballet, among many others. He currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at NYU Tisch Dance where he teaches Pilates, Ballet, Contemporary Technique.
LINDSAY HILSCHER is a dancer, yogi and passionate about cooking and integrative nutrition. She has been practicing with Eddie Stern since 2012 and has studied under Paramaguru R. Sharath Jois in Mysore, India, where she was granted her a level II authorization to teach. JORDAN RISDON is a dancer, marathon runner, and mother. Her class focuses on linked breath with movement, with the class building towards a peak pose. Integrated Pilates-based exercises will increase core strength and pelvic stability. Every class will end with an indulgent savasana.
DANCE CLASS FACULTY
HOLLIS BARTLETT & NATTIE TROGDON are performers, creators, educators, and partners. Their class draws from their shared and personal investigations into the form and function of the body, prioritizing effective movement, structural soundness and alignment. Rooted in improvisation and their post-modern lineage, class combines codified technical forms, with examinations of weight and momentum, while creating a safe space to research, question, find joy and catharsis, and to rigorously explore creativity and artistic aesthetics together.
LINDY FINES is a choreographer, dance film maker, and director of GREYZONE, a multimedia dance project that she cofounded with designer Justin Fines. She is a certified Pilates Instructor through the Kane School and has a BFA in modern dance from the University of Oklahoma. Her classes are fun, challenging and are shaped by her knowledge of anatomy as well as her training in the Cunningham technique.
KATY PYLE is the Founder of Ballez, a gender-expansive and inclusive ballet practice for all bodies. Katy brings their many decades of experience as a multi-genre performer, music-loving choreographer, and emotionally expressive dancer to their teaching, alongside a deeply invested anatomical lens honed from many years as a yoga teacher and student of somatic practices. Be prepared to play, laugh, sweat, and celebrate your fellow dancers.
JESSIE YOUNG is a dancer, choreographer, teacher originally from the Pacific Northwest and living in Brooklyn. Her classes focus on exercises that integrate breath work with core support and imagery alongside with somatic awareness. Jessie works from her training as a dancer (MFA UIUC) to build classes that create a space for considering how movement, perception, sensation and self awareness meet through the rituals of a dance class.
